100% Secure

01. INTRODUCTION

What is Trezor?

Trezor is the world's first and most trusted hardware wallet. It is a physical device designed to securely store your cryptocurrency private keys offline, isolating them from potential online threats like hackers, malware, and phishing attacks. Unlike software wallets (hot wallets) that are connected to the internet, Trezor keeps your sensitive data in a secure, offline environment known as "cold storage."

By visiting Trezor.io/start, you are taking the first step towards true financial sovereignty. Whether you own a Trezor Model One, Trezor Model T, or the new Trezor Safe 3, the setup process is designed to be intuitive, secure, and robust. This guide will walk you through every necessary step to ensure your assets remain safe.

Offline Storage

Keys never leave the device.

Open Source

Transparent security architecture.

Easy Recovery

Standardized backup seeds.

02. SETUP GUIDE

STEP 01

Unbox & Inspect

Before connecting your device, carefully inspect the packaging. Your Trezor device should arrive in a tamper-evident box. If the holographic seal appears broken, torn, or modified in any way, DO NOT USE THE DEVICE. Contact Trezor support immediately. Security starts the moment you hold the box.

Check the holographic seals on the USB port (Model One) or the box opening (Model T/Safe 3).
STEP 02

Connect to Trezor.io/Start

Connect your Trezor device to your computer using the provided USB cable. Open your preferred web browser (Chrome, Firefox, or Brave are recommended) and navigate to trezor.io/start. This is the official landing page that will guide you to download the companion software.

Note: Always verify the URL in your browser address bar to ensure you are on the official site and not a phishing replica.

STEP 03

Install Trezor Suite

From the start page, you will be prompted to download Trezor Suite. This is the desktop application that acts as the interface for your wallet. It is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

  • Download the installer for your operating system.
  • Run the installation file and follow the on-screen prompts.
  • Launch Trezor Suite and allow it to detect your connected device.
STEP 04

Install Firmware

Your Trezor device ships without firmware installed to ensure that you are always running the latest, most secure version. Trezor Suite will prompt you to install the firmware. Click "Install Firmware" and wait for the process to complete. Do not disconnect your device during this process.

STEP 05

Create New Wallet

Once the firmware is installed, you will see two options: "Create new wallet" or "Recover wallet". Since you are setting up a new device, select Create new wallet.

You will then choose between a "Standard backup" (12 or 24 words) or "Shamir backup" (Model T only). For most users, the Standard backup is sufficient and highly secure.

03. CRITICAL SECURITY

The Recovery Seed Backup

This is the most important step in the entire process. Read carefully.

Your Trezor will generate a unique sequence of words known as your Recovery Seed. This seed is the master key to your funds. If you lose your Trezor device, you can use this seed to restore your wallet on a new device. However, if anyone else gets your seed, they can steal your funds.

NEVER Digital

Never take a photo, screenshot, or save your seed in a text file, email, or cloud storage.

ALWAYS Physical

Write your seed down on the provided recovery seed cards using a permanent marker.

🔒

Keep it Safe

Store your recovery card in a secure, fire-resistant location away from prying eyes.

Trezor Suite will ask you to verify your seed words to ensure you wrote them down correctly. Do not skip this verification step.

04. FINALIZATION

PIN & Passphrase

Set a PIN: You will be asked to set a PIN code. This protects your device from unauthorized physical access. Choose a strong PIN that is not easily guessable (avoid 1234 or 0000).

Passphrase (Advanced): For an extra layer of security, you can enable the Passphrase feature. This acts as a "25th word" to your recovery seed. Note that if you forget your passphrase, your funds in that hidden wallet are lost forever. We recommend this only for advanced users.

Setup Complete!

Your Trezor is now ready to use. You can now send, receive, and trade cryptocurrencies securely within Trezor Suite. Remember, your security is in your hands.
